2 1/2 stars. It's okay, but I've definitely had better, e.g., at Carmen's. Really large portions of heavy food. I have described the alfredo sauce as "warm, runny glue, if it tasted like cream cheese." They bring out a nice sesame seed bread with butter, then try to sell you a bowl of olive oil with herbs. The fried calamari is pretty good, but not particularly interesting. The Caesar salad is decent, maybe a little overdressed. Ho hum.

It's American Italian. Red sauces, lots of pasta. I like the veal. They offer choices off the beaten path like liver and onions with mashed potatoes. Fun place to eat. Great service. Family owned and feels like the mafia has sit downs in the corner booths.

Me and my old lady, Jody come her and eat a lot. I tip extra good so that the waiters laugh at my jokes. The food is simply divine, honey and I just love to watch my Jody snarf down a good lasagne. Ahha.......

Ok. 1.5, tops. The atmosphere is pretty cute but the food is just waaay too bad for me to give a high score. I will never understand why this place is so packed. I'm not a snob about Italian food or anything, or food in general, really. I'm pretty adventurous and like to try new things but from what I've had here... well... never again. We ordered an appetizer sampler plate which was cold by the time it reached our table. The fried items on the plate were soggy and chewy. Not good. The meatballs were a disappointment but edible. My friend and I both ordered pasta, though I don't remember the plate names. His was in a cream sauce and mine was tomato based. Even though I was really hungry after the let-down apps I could not eat more than a few bites of my pasta because it was SOOO sweet. I mean... dessert sweet but with the acidity of tomatoes. Ew. My friend offered to switch me plates but his was even worse. The amount of garlic in his food was probably 4x more than necessary because my mouth was literally on fire from the seasoning (and i love garlic!). Really disappointing especially after hearing so many raves about how amazing this place is supposed to be. Ick.

I'm with Libby on this one. This place is charming. In my humble opinion, there is no better spiedini in town. It's fabuloso!! And the sauce... Maybe I just have a sweet tooth - but I LOVE it - robust, rich (and yes, sweet). Any good Italian restaurant should serve a house salad that hits the spot. Cascone's does a fine job here. I've also found the service to be quite good. There's one fellow there who is so good, it's hard to take him seriously. Now here's the crowning achievement for this place - and the reason that I gave it 5 instead of 4 stars. This is going to sound crazy, but you MUST try the lemon cake. They'll bring you a big slice of the finest dessert I've ever had in my entire life. Yes, it is THAT good. Trust me, you'll be back!

Today I had lunch and it was good. The quality of the food is good. The service is good. The price is good. The atmosphere is good. Overall a good restaurant. I would go back. Nothing great but decent.

We visited Cascone's with the extended family to celebrate my Aunt's retirement on a Friday night. Considering there were 14 of us - including four kids & a few heavy drinking adults - the server was patient, but didn't deliver all our plates at the same time. There was also some confusion about the bill as the waiter refused to split the check. Thankfully, I was not involved in that discussion as I still assume my parents will cover me (though I'm nearing thirty). My dinner was not good, but everyone else seemed happy. I made the mistake of ordering seafood. I tend to forget I'm no longer on the coast near fresh fish when I travel back home to Kansas. The piano player was fun and took our requests. The place cleared out right before the KU basketball game, so the anxious kids could run around without disturbing anyone. (Ice cream scoops were also delivered on cue when a couple of the toddlers started to cry.) Shrug. I probably wouldn't select this place myself, but it worked for the family occasion. 28 March 2008

my favorite chicken parmesean. Wonderful atmosphere and occasional live music. Locally owned and the owner is great. Sometimes, he'll just come and sit with you for awhile. He looks like an old "made" mobster. Love it.

The food is so good that for a second I closed my eyes and I thought I was in somebody's living room. I opened them and instead of a living room I was in a bustling full service restaurant that not only was serving a full menu, but even employed a quasi lounge singer and an accompanist. No, it wasn't Frank Sinatra, but it was a welcome slice of the evening's atmosphere. The menu is loaded with traditional Italian dishes, ones that you know your adopted Italian grandmother would serve right down to the spumoni. The dishes are large so don't feel bad if you ask to box up your leftovers. I can't wait to come back and I guarantee I won't forget my appetite.

Wow, what a meal. Had a party of 15, timely great service. Got to try the pineapple infused vodka. Very nice chicken spedini. Nice pasta side, kinda sweet tomato sauce. Will return to enjoy another great meal.

Came here on the recommendation of a colleague and everything was excellent. Server was attentive but not too much. Had the seafood pasta even though i wasn't sure about freshness in KC but it was fresh and delicious. Even the salad dressing and croutons were fresh made. Highly recommend

All my wife and I can say is WOW! This was one of the best experiences we've had dining out in Kansas City. We looked this place up to celebrate my wife's new full time position, and we were not disappointed. I can honestly say I enjoyed everything I put in my mouth here. The server started us off with their fresh baked bread. Awesome bread! We then added the Oil Dipping Service and the mozzarella sticks, which our server, Jason, said were the best in town. I have to agree. The mozzarella sticks were to die for and the sauce for dipping in was excellent. The oil for dipping was well seasoned and very tasty. For the entree's, I got fettuccine alfredo and my wife got a stuffed pasta with prosciutto and mushrooms in a cream sauce. Wonderful! My only regret is that I only had so much stomach space. I could not stop eating the food! We also got their lemon cake to go, which was great as well. Our server, Jason, was top notch. Couldn't ask for anything more. He was knowledgeable, fun, and very helpful. I highly recommend this place! They have live music on other nights. We just happened to miss out. My wife and I will happily return, likely with our parents or other visitors.

We went during a very busy time (7pm); however we were not in a rush and actually enjoyed the slow pace of our meal. We ordered the dipping sauce and that was delicious. I ordered the chicken spanini and others in our party ordered the chicken Parmesan (huge portions on all by the way), the seafood pasta and the chicken lemoncello. The red pasta sauce is very sweet- just FYI for those who might not enjoy a sweet pasta sauce. For dessert we ordered the lemon cake and Italian ice cream which were also very delicious. Good food and large portions. Also, all dinners came with either a soup or salad.

The food was great - we visited Cascone's for dinner this past Monday. My wife had the veal and lasagna special and I had a classic spaghetti with meatballs. We also split an antipasta as an appetizer. Cascone's sauce is top-notch, and their meatballs are fantastic. My wife's veal was a bit too tough for my liking, but she enjoyed it. The antipasta was heaped with salami, pepperoni, mozzarella and tomato, delicious banana peppers, shrimp and even an anchovie spread over a lightly dressed salad. The portions are very generous, and we had leftovers for the next two days. I had no issues with the service itself - our waitress was very cordial and helpful. However, this Cascone's location needs to address a few issues. First, the bathroom was in a regrettable state - it desperately needed a cleaning and it reflects poorly on the restaurant that the bathroom is not impeccable during the dinner service. Second, the decor needs a refresh. Office-style dropped ceiling tiles always looks a bit cheap in a restaurant that is striving for old-world charm and ambiance. The vinyl upholstery on the booth that we had feels very dated. They do make an effort to dim the lighting to hide the imperfections, but they are still noticeable to the discerning eye. In short, Cascone's delivers when it comes to food quality, but they need to work on presentation - especially when it comes to the bathroom.

This may be one of my most challenging reviews to write to date. There's really a lot to dislike about Johnny Cascone's, but there are also some positives. First, the interior is just friggin' awful. The carpeting is really old. And dirty. And smelly. The musty smell overwhelms the smell of food. The restaurant is dark and cavernous and dimly lit. At one point many many many years ago, if they had a few candles on tables, someone might have thought for a minute that it was romantic, but the word that jumps to mind right now is pathetic. Second, we had a Groupon. They pulled the old bait and switch sometime between when I bought the Groupon and when we went, so that the Groupon is now only useable at a Cascone's up North and not at this restaurant, but when I bought it, both restaurants were listed and it mentioned them both in the text of the Groupon when I pulled it up, but the voucher had been changed. Not sure why Groupon would allow that, but the restaurant refused to honor the Groupon. Our waitress was very nice about it and apologetic, but it felt a bit underhanded. Also, the average age of the clientele the evening we were in was probably just over 70. And I ain't a'kiddin'! Being utterly realistic, their customer base won't be on this earth forever, so if they don't cultivate some younger customers, their business won't survive for much longer. What brings them up to 3 stars from -3 is the food. Our entrees came with a choice of soup or salad. My hubby had the minestrone which was overly salty, but I had a white bean soup that had a lovely flavor. Our entrees were massive and their red sauce is incredible. Their sausage is excellent, too. We were pleased with the service as well. Our waitress was very nice and our meals were served up fast and hot. We're not big meat and pasta eaters, so probably wouldn't go back often and I still have a bad taste in my mouth regarding their bait and switch tactics on the Groupon. The ambiance isn't great, either, so we probably won't move Johnny Cascone's into our regular restaurant rotation, but this is a place I'd visit again if someone asked me to go.

Have been to this place about 1/2 dozen times now. We live in Wichita, but go to a bunch of Royals games. We go after each game if time allows. The service has ALWAYS been top notch and the food just a little better. John usually seats us and it a breath of fresh air. Nice to see other people (we are restaurateurs as well) enjoy their work. The food is very "old school" Italian. Home cooked sauces and dressings. The dining room is very 70's, but I think that adds to the charm. I think it would be counter productive to remodel. Even though it is dated, it is still clean. This place does a great job and I hope it stays the same.........forever!

My husband and I came for my birthday dinner because he knows I love Italian. We were both disappointed by the food and our waitress was terrible. She didn't listen to what we wanted and then neglected us. The food is too pricy for all that mess. $60 for a gross meal and bad service.

This place is "old school" and "local"..two things in short supply in Johnson County! At lunch i recommend the chicken parm sandwich or the russian salad, or consider the daily special they are always good. The sautéed white fish is also a favorite .

Great service, but bland food. Father's Day dinner was reserved at Cascone's this year, and we brought along our entourage of a family. We had one waiter for a table of 14, and he hung in there for the two hour meal. A very sweet server, and did a wonderful job making sure each of the 14 customers were doing well. Bread was a large loaf of white with sesame seeds on the outside--soft and moist on the inside, crunchy on the outside. Bread wasn't seasoned, and it wasn't anything magnificent. Entrees came with soup or salad, so I chose the salad with house dressing. Salad came with diced pimentos, red onion, and an Italian dressing. They used iceberg lettuce, so again, nothing magnificent. For my entree I chose the shrimp diablo pasta. Noodles were perfectly cooked al dente, but again, the sauce lacked something. I tasted the plain red sauce from my partner's ravioli, but it didn't taste marvelous. Maybe I've been spoiled with herbed and garlic sauces for too long, but the majority of the food tasted bland and non seasoned. There was a little old man (I assume he was an owner), who continued to check in with us during the meal. We really felt at home and well cared for, but the food is what confused me.

I love this place! The food is so authentic and my whole family has been going for years! They truly brought Italian food to Kansas and after going here, I refuse to go anywhere else for Italian. It makes all the other places taste like microwaved food. I love how family orientated this place is and it has always made my family feel like they are at home. try the eggplant Parmesan!

Was treated to dinner there a few months ago and loved the big band swing. Attentive waiter who worked hard with me to put together a gluten-free meal. Neither waiter's fault nor mine, but the compromises we had to make resulted in only a fair veal parm with lots of gristle. We were hungry for Italian a few weeks ago and I thought I could find a different entree that would work or else I'd just have a big salad. Disappointed right from the start due to a very long wait to be seated in a venue that was about 25% occupied on a Monday night. With so many tables available it's a shame we were seated between a wall and a major traffic path. Waitress was friendly but far from professional and knew nothing about gluten-free options. She even said no when I asked if they had gluten-free pasta but I pressed her and it took quite a while for her to find out they had gluten-free mostaccolli only. I wanted the linguini with clam sauce after she checked to see if the sauce was gluten-free but of course had to substitute the heavy gluten-free mostaccolli for the more delicate linguini. When she brought the bread she put it down right next to me even though I had explained to her earlier that I couldn't eat bread. The salad was decent and the freshly grated cheese was a treat but all through the service the waitress just never showed a professional manner. My entree was rather mediocre, the only real flavor coming from the freshly grated cheese and mostaccolli is just too clunky for a dish that shouldn't be that heavy. We had to wait a very long time for our ticket as the waitress pretty much disappeared and we had to ask twice for our check. It was only then that I found out we were charged $4 for gluten-free pasta taking my meal price from $16 to $20. Definitely not worth it! Outrageous. Exploiting customers like that means the loss of customers. I have it on honest sources that gluten-free pasta is basically the same price as regular pasta so why should people who needs it be taken advantage of that way? Shame on you and your lack of respectful customer service. And on top of that, I'm not even convinced I got a gluten-free meal that night as the symptoms I experienced that night and for the next few days were identical to what I endured when I previously consumed gluten.

Walked out. We were seated immediately. A waitress stopped by and said she'd be right back. Waited and waited. Finally another waiter said he'd get us bread and water. Not. Finally waitress delivered food next table, refilled drinks, went to another table to refill drinks and was SHOCKED when we got up and left. The lady time we were there service wasn't good. We love the food but not going back for a LONG LONG time if ever. Get it together guys. No wonder you weren't very busy.

My girlfriend and I gave Johnny Cascone's a try last weekend and we were NOT disappointed! We got the special on Groupon which gave us $22 worth of food for $10. Each of us had the Italian Flag (which includes Lasagna, Chicken Parm, and Fettuccine Alfredo). The marinara sauce is light, sweet, and has a lot of flavor. It was really tasty. The Alfredo sauce was good, but a bit bland. When I go back, I will probably stick to the Marinara. The bread was good, not great. Still warm and fluffy, can't complain. The lobby/waiting area of the restaurant has about a hundred pictures of family which is pretty cool. And they had live music when we went in on a Friday. The only complaint I have is that we waited about 25 minutes to get our check after asking. It was a Friday night and our waitress (who was good despite this) had a big table, so its not a huge deal. Our final bill after tax was $37 (not including the Groupon), so prices are very reasonable. We really enjoyed our first experience at Johnny Cascone's and will be back!

The food at this restaurant is, for the most part, very good. My family went on a Wednesday night which is 1/2 off a bottle of wine. This being said, I have to give this restaurant a bad review due to ethical reasoning. We ordered our bottle of wine because our waiter announced when we sat down that it was 1/2 any bottle up to 100 dollars. Upon arrival of our check we presented the waiter with a 25% off total bill coupon. He then said we could not combine two discounts. We could choose to have the 1/2 bottle of wine or coupon. They need to work on communication skills if they are going to send out coupons. The coupon just said 25% off and the wine was a special for EVERYONE that entered the restaurant, a house special, not a coupon. We will not be back for ethical reasons.

Loved, loved, loved this place!! Came in with 2 girlfriends, and we were treated like family. Everyone was extremely friendly, and you could tell that most of the customers have been going there for years. Servers were stopping by other server's tables to say hi and inquire about them and their families. The booths on either side of us stopped by our booth at least once to talk to us. It really did feel like our long-lost Italian family! We were there for a birthday dinner, so our server gave us free olive oil & garlic for our bread. Much appreciated, and it was soo good! (I'm pretty sure there are illegal substances in it.) My friends loved the salad dressing, and I really enjoyed my soup. It was like a chicken noodle soup but with acini de pepe. I had the eggplant parm, and I loved it. The marinara was delicious, and I wish I'd picked up a couple jars of it on my way out. The entree was huge with two very large pieces of eggplant, and I was only able to eat one. It seriously would have made two good-sized meals. (I was very sad that our hotel didn't have a refrigerator for the leftovers!)

What a disappointment! The little old man that sat us was the only enjoyable thing at this place. They were on a short wait so my husband and I went to the bar just to check out the menu. Old man came to the bar to ask our name, did a cute clap and smile and led us to our table. Everything was down hill from there. They looked a little busy but not anything crazy. Our server seemed a bit overwhelmed. My husbands beer was dead when it got to the table and I didn't get my soda until after our apps came out. A different server came by at one point to ask if we'd been helped yet because we had nothing but bread and water after 20 minutes. Alfredo was way to thick, almost paste like as well as the "light" cream that didn't even slide off the fork. Chicken parm was pretty bad. Red sauce had no flavor, chicken itself was an unseasoned, undercooked hot mess. Meatballs tasted like soggy breadcrumbs. Overall this place was just very disappointing. I'd go to Olive Garden over this place any day, hell Fazolis is better. Over priced, bad quality food, bad quality ingredients, questionable service, but one cute old man.

The food was excellent. The service was horrible. Our waitress looked like she was ticked off that she was even there. She was rude, gruff, abrasive and should NOT be in the food service industry. Horrible. Won't return to this location. Ever. Again, food was delicious.

Don't come in a group, don't expect to be waited on if everyone in not at your table, no extra drinks or appetizers . Don't let Kevin wait your table. 2 times , won't try again. Arrived at 6:25, only had one drink, never offered another. By 8:15 we finally left. Never offer any kind of recovery.

We had never been to this location before, but we had visited the North Oak location before and loved it. So when we saw a Groupon for sale, we thought we'd give this location a shot. First of all, the interior was terrible and the music was much worse. Ex. On one of the walls, they used ceiling fan tiles as decoration, holes in them and all, but they just slapped some paint on them. Overall, it looks like they raided a Hobby Lobby and Home Depot clearance table. The person I was with also made an observation about the lighting; it feels like a funeral home due to the pink lights. Maybe they are hoping it will make their food look better? Plus, the restaurant smelled of mildew which completely overpowered the smell of the food. As for the music, it was all over the place, from Neil Diamond to Barry Manilow. Second, the food was bland, overcooked, and the sauces were pasty. I ordered the Tortellini w/ peas, prosciutto, and mushrooms, and the person I was with ordered the Osso Bucco. The latter has always been excellent at the North Oak location. Finally, the server was marginal at best and had a bad attitude. The person I was with had to send the Osso back because gravy was put on it; he asked for no gravy due to a gluten allergy. When we brought it up to the waitress, she exclaimed that he only told her that he couldn't have gravy on the potatoes which wasn't accurate. We won't be back.

Celebrated my birthday there this past weekend, good food and good service! You will need a reservation (especially on the weekend). The place is pretty small, and they really pack you in there, but it's worth it!

Visited this restaurant a few times in the past, but had a groupon this time. Made a reservation as was a Saturday night. Waiting room was packed, but only had a short wait and only drank half of my glass of wine before seating. Service and food was excellent. This is locally owned and the Cascone brothers are well known at running great Italian restaurants. Thank you Johnny Cascones.

Ordered lasagna , meatballs , salad and spedini for Christmas Day . I picked up order on New Year's Eve and everything was organized and ready to go . The food was a huge hit on Christmas Day and the food was excellent . The lasagna is best I've ever had and meatballs are killer.

Love the food here. The red sauce is amazing, and I only wish that I had the recipe. Ordered the Cascone lasagna, and it was cooked to perfection. The cheese was baked to a crisp, the lasagna cooked tender, and the meat filling delicious. As a tip, order the chine bones for an appetizer.

As a person from Saint Louis and knows the hill in dt STL, this is a great taste of it. The service is great the food was great. It's nice to enjoy an Italian meal in a fine friendly setting. Hot bread, salad, chicken spedini. Just like home or Zia's on the hill.

Wife and I were craving Italian so we decided to give Cascone's a try. The interior is very dated, but we were there for the food, so big deal. We were seated right away even thought the restaurant was very busy, almost every table was full. Service was a little slow, but the wait staff was moving as fast as they could so I don't have an issue with that. Our waitress was very pleasant and was able to answer my wife's questions about the menu. There was a little bit of a mix up with our appetizer, fried mozzarella, but it was quickly resolved. The fried mozzarella is made fresh in house, not frozen and it was delicious. I go the Italian flag sampler, wife got the chicken limonata elaina. Don't know why it was called Italian flag as there was no green on it, but everything was very tasty and well prepared. Wife said the chicken limonata was a little light on the limone, but again was pretty tasty. They had live music going which was also nice. I have been searching for a good Italian restaurant that serves Southern Italian cuisine with that thick rich marinara sauce with a little hint of sweetness. Cascone's comes close. We will be back.

Cascone's has some of the best marinara sauce I've ever put in my mouth......sweet, spicy, and delicious....mmmmm, I'm getting homesick for KC, might have to visit again! I've been here many times for lunch and dinner, with just one other person and as part of a large group, and have never had a bad experience. It's nice enough that you'll enjoy the experience, but not so formal that you'll be uncomfortable if you're not "properly" dressed for dinner. In the evening the lighting is dim and they often have live music playing to add to the ambience. And with portions big enough that you'll have enough for lunch the next day, you won't feel like you've been taken to the cleaners on prices.

Two years ago, I came here with my husband, hoping for a romantic night out. Long story short, we were so disappointed that we swore we'd never go back. Last night, my mother-in-law wanted to go there for her birthday, so we went, ready to be disappointed again. Man, were we wrong! What a difference! The place was clean, not too crowded, the wait staff was friendly and even catered to my special food needs. Food was excellent and enough for leftovers. We will not only be back, we will recommend this place to anyone who asks.

Ok. That is all I can really say. Think of it like an Italian Bob Evans. Definitely old folks food. Not much flavor, zero spices. Not very impressed at all. Waitress was very polite and friendly.

At some restaurants, you won't feel comfortable without proper dress, which might include a sport coat and perhaps a tie for a man, and suitable attire for a woman. In fact at some restaurants with a dress code, you will be lent a sport coat at the entrance, if you are not wearing one. That's not a problem here. At Johnny Cascone's, you'll surely be comfortable, if you have a walker with you. A high percentage of the customers seem to be pre-nursing home age. At most restaurants, I am called "Sir." If the restaurant knows me, I am more likely called "Doctor" or "Professor." Here I was repeatedly called "Sweetheart." The waitress went out of her way to tell us about her sex life and the time that her boyfriend threw her out of the bedroom, when she had garlic breath. Yes, this is an old time Italian-American restaurant. But old time doesn't quite get it. I felt like I was in a small town restaurant in the Ozarks. OK, I've told you the negatives. Here are the positives. The dining room is beautiful with many very comfortable booths. The dipping oil you can order as an appetizer is terrific, and is well worth its moderate price. It comes out in a large bowl. I used it on almost everything. The angel hair pasta was very good, and the whitefish was very enjoyable, especially after I spread some of the dipping oil on it.

Worst service ever! Bartenders had no clue filling orders. Once the old ugly one yelled at us, we got up and left. The gentleman next to us asked to see a manager, and the bartenders response was "we're looking for one too". Had a groupon for the place, will be giving that to someone we don't like. Life is too short to waste your time in a place like this. Lots of other good choices nearby! Cheers!

Very comfortable, warm, friendly place. The olive oil mixture is delish with the fresh baked Italian bread, the homemade Fettuccine Alfredo and Lasagna are all very good. Denise was great - helpful, fun, attentive. The chicken limonata was also tasty - and very rich! My husband and I always check with each other to see if a restaurant or city is a "come back to" place. Johnny Cascone's definitely IS!!!

One of the best Italian restaurants I've been too. Excellent menu, but be prepared to EAT! From the loaf of fresh bread and olive and cheese platter to the generous portions, it would be impossible to leave hungry. Best enjoyed with a quiet date or a full family event with a large dinning area but yet intimate settings. Superb service with great menu knowledge and suggestions. Gina was polite and always there when needed. The red sauce was a bit sweet for my taste, but it paired deliciously with the meatball. The lasagna tasted a bit like ravioli to me, but it was scrumptious none the less. Excellent dinner with my wife for just $50, wine included. Definitely will come again.

If you like Italian food, I suggest you steer far, far away from this place. Now, granted, I was raised in a VERY Italian part of the country (the New York metro to be more precise), but this was literally, the WORST "italian" food I've ever had. Olive Garden is better. The menu is very limited, I was hoping for a penne vodka, but there was, in fact, no penne to be found. Or rigatoni. Or even cheese tortelini. We were a party of 3. The osso bucco (a special) was enjoyed, but the lasagna and tortelini in cheese sauce were not. Issues started with the service. When one of my dining partners asked if the lasagna was served with salad, she was told "no, but you can get meatballs". Directly after which she was asked "would you like the soup or salad?". Guess who was charged $3 for meatballs she didn't really want? The salads were just iceberg lettuce with the barest amount of Italian dressing (it tasted bottled to me). The Tortelini sauce came out with a weird film over it, as though it had been sitting out for a while. Grease was visibly pooling on the surface, and it was strangely overly rich and tasteless at the same time. The pasta itself wasn't terrible, though the filling was pretty bland. The Lasagna came out literally SWIMMING in sauce. Totally flavorless tomato sauce. The lasagna itself was pretty good, however you had to dig through Chef Boyardee quality tomato sauce to get there. I really have no idea how this place has the reputation it does. It was really one of the worst meals I've ever had. Thankfully, I'll be heading to New York soon and I plan on gorging myself on ACTUAL decent Italian food.

I love Italian food - but I have to admit - it's not the first type of food I consider when I'm making a lunch date - be it for business or pleasure. Cascone's changed that for me. Their lunch menu offers all sorts of dishes that are not overly heavy, they have a great "dipping service" for their bread (read olive oil and vinegar with whole cloves of garlic) and portion sizes that will fill you up and your doggy bag too. Quieter than the average lunch place, with fast service. I know that one of the owner's daughters has been developing things like "wine dinners" etc. You should definitely call and find about them and get on the email list. There are deals to be had! If you like really great, buttery-icing chocolate cake, order it here! And take some home!

Alan says we've been to Johnny Cascone's and he's probably right. I just don't remember being there. Last night Cousin Lisa brought us dinner from Cascone's and now I will remember. Dinner started w/ minestrone. Very tasty. Next was a huge salad w/ a choice of Italian or ranch dressing. Fresh and good. I had the Italian dressing, which was nicely balanced. There were a couple of loaves of seeded white bread which Alan sliced and those were very popular, but the hit was one of the most delicious lasagnes I can remember. The tomato sauce was excellent, but then so was every other component. If I had a second stomach I would have had seconds, but firsts were more than adequate. Dessert was an entire lemon cake cut in slices too big for any one person to consume. I didn't have any, but it looked pretty. There was plenty left this morning.

Went looking for an Italian rest. and found this one after using Yelp. Had a very good time and the only knock is that we were seated in a corner booth so one of us had to look at the wall. Service was attentive, the food came to the table at a reasonable time and the meal was very good. I will keep this in mind next time I am in the area.

Had 11 there for dinner No Steak available, so forced to eat very bad Italian food. The waiter had zero food experience could not cut a check three ways, had zero chance of getting the order right. I am in KC and no steak? Waiter says "Sysco didn't deliver!" The pasta on my meal was fine the sauce was tomato paste lacking any real garlic or olive oil flavor. Bread was fine, The waiter when asked how the vegetable was prepared he said in a pan, my guest said ... sauteed he replied "yeah .... They came steamed ? . No one got the correct wine order and when served the waiter tried to fake it ... Even didn't know a Char was WHITE and said yes as he held a red wine this is your Chardonnay ! Look there are bad attempts at serving a group but this was well ... I was looking for the cameras - Are we being punked? is this candid camera? I am curious about the reviews here as the appear to be from a marketing company as there is no way these people are legit! Read this? Very comfortable, warm, friendly place. The olive oil mixture is delish with the fresh baked Italian bread Or This ?? Excellent menu, but be prepared to EAT! From the loaf of fresh bread and olive and cheese platter to the generous portions, it would be impossible to leave hungry. NOT HOW REAL PEOPLE WRITE!!!! Come on Yelp ... obvious BS !! Something smells bad here besides the food ...... yelp!

Cascone's is one of the best Italian restaurants in town. They have a sweet and spicy marinara sauce. You can taste the sweet basil, onion, garlic, every spice they use you can taste the hand crafted touch in it. We eat here a few times a year. Great for birthdays or just a group get together. Prices are very reasonable and portions are huge. I always take 1/2 of what I order home to eat the next day. Staff is friendly and make you feel like you are one of the family. The are efficient and fast and knowledgeable. They know exactly what is in each dish and were able to tell me which ones to avoid do to dairy. They are fast on refills and clearing dishes. Today I took a co-worker there. He is new in town and wanted a good place to take his family. I said I know the place I will take you there for lunch and let me know what you think. I had the shells with marinara and he had the lasagna. He was so happy with the food that he is taking his family back there this weekend. If you haven't been here you need to go. Family owned and so yummy.

I can't understand why this restaurant gets such good reviews. The interior is in dire need of remodeling. I went with a large group and we had our own dining area and we had good service. Nothing outstanding, but they get a break on this because we had 15 at our table. Appetizers were good, but not outstanding. I can only comment on my entre. I got the Italian Flag. Lasagna was mediocre at best. The red sauce tasted and looked like someone had just opened a can of tomato sauce and put sugar in it. It also had chicken parm on the plate and it was good. The other pasta on the dish was fettuccini alfredo, someone please tell the cook to SALT the pasta water before cooking it. No salt whatsoever on it. I actually had to salt it to be able to enjoy the dish. It was served lukewarm and we all know what happens with alfredo sauce is a little cool, it gets almost solid. Desserts were good, lemon cake was the best part of the meal. Even though we had a large group, no dipping sauce was offered for our bread. Wanted to give this place a much better review, but just couldn't in all good conscience.

Bring your appetite! We had a late Saturday evening meal here. They had live music to entertain the supper crowd. The portions are large and delicious. My wife ordered the pork chops and didn't realize there would be two very large chops. She could hardly finish the first one and because my veal scaloppini covered about three-quarters of the plate, I couldn't even begin to help her out with the second chop. Unfortunately, we were traveling and I couldn't take it in a to-go box. Our waiter, Dwight, was attentive and responsive. Great place for a great Italian meal.

I took my hunny here about a year ago on a surprise 'man date'. When we first went in, I thought the atmosphere was really nice. I loved all the pics on the walls and the authentic feel of the place. I've eaten at some nice restaurants, so anytime you can switch it up, I'm all in: this place was that for me. We were seated fairly quickly at a little table by the bar. We ordered toasted ravioli as an appetizer...this is where the story really begins...the red sauce is AMAZING! The flavor is unlike anything I've ever had before. In the year since I've eaten there, I have yet to have anything that tingled my tastebuds quite like that! Once we finished our ravioli, we literally used a spoon to scoop up and eat the rest of the red sauce...needless to say, it was the best thing I ever ate, to date. Definite recommendation from my hubby and I!! We'll be going back soon, for man date #2.

I had never eaten at Johnny Cascone's, but I have eaten at Tommy's and Cascone's north of the river. We went at 4:30 on a Friday night, so there wasn't alot of people there yet. The atmosphere is fantastic. Old family pictures, dark wood, comfy seats and great music! The olive oil dipping service is a must! My boyfriend doesn't usually like those type of things, but he loved it. The bread is amazing with the olive oil and the garlic deliciousness! My boyfriend got the Italian Flag. A slice of lasagna, chicken parmesan and fettucine alfredo. The lasagna was devine. Creamy and cheesy with sections of italian sausage... and that sauce! I only had one bite but I was jealous I wasn't eating it. The chicken parmesan was good. The fettucine alfredo was creamy and oh so good! The sauce was not runny and the noodles were perfectly cooked. I had the chicken spedini with a house salad. The house salad dressing was delicious. A vinegarette type - very light. The chicken spedini was great also. Garlicy and lightly breaded. The whole experience was great. We'll definately be back for the lasagna and fettucine alfredo next time!

I have been a customer of Johnny Cascone's since they opened in the late 80s or early 90s. They have a consistently good product. When I think of red sauce, I think of Cascone's. The alfredo sauce is the best I have ever had, anywhere. I usually get the Italian Flag combo, because the Chicken Parm, the Lasagna, and the Fettuccine Alfredo are so good. This is the kind of authentic Italian that you just can't find in most of the US. Though I live across the country now, I go to Johnny Cascone's at least twice a year. Excellent!

This place is so schizo.. From the waiters mouth. "well it all depends on who is in the kitchen".. Being a fat kid, of couse i love the butter/cream and you will NOT.. EVER..NOT NEVER.. go wrong with the seafood stuffed artichoke.. almost too stuffed.. and the alfredo dishes all depends on the the kitchen.. had a 5 star, and a 3 star.. Note: Check with wait staff but tomato sauce is the sugar kinda.. which is whack if not expecting.

Had dinner here tonight with my folks. We were there early, and it turns out they have an early-bird dinner menu for just $9.99! But you have to ask for it -- they don't give you that menu when you sit down. The early-bird menu includes a salad and spumoni ice cream for dessert. Tonight I had the chicken parmigiana from the early-bird menu. I thought it was good, and the portion was the right size. It came with a side of spaghetti in red sauce and while there is still obviously sugar in it it was much less sweet than on my last visit. So maybe I just got a batch that time that was over-sweetened. My Mom ordered the seafood-stuffed artichoke from the regular appetizer menu, and it arrived looking quite spectacular, the leaves all fanned out to hold the stuffing and just brimming with crab and shrimp. It certainly is large enough to be a main course, and that's all she had. Dad had the oxtail stew, served over risotto, that was on the daily specials and being promoted at the table by the chef. He seemed to enjoy it and was able to finish most of it. (I think they gave him a slightly smaller portion and only charged him the early-bird price, but it was still a very generous portion.) The salad was a nice mix of greens, but I thought the house dressing a bit bland. Decor is comfortable. Service was very good tonight -- we needed to be somewhere else later and our server was very accommodating about getting everything to us without rushing us. All in all a nice experience.

The food is great the service is horrible. The last two times we've been there, it's been a nightmare. The first time we got seated waited 30 mins and got up and left because no one came to our table. We felt like lepers. The second time we waited 20 mins before we got waters and bread my wife's glass of wine took 40 mins and my Mr Pibb took 45 after I ordered it twice. The food was amazing! Till the waitress came over and asked if we want grated cheese on our food after we where done eating I replied no and asked for boxes from 3 people finally got them only to wait 30 more minutes for our bill. We got there at 830 and left around 1030. It was obvious that they jammed extra tables everywhere to capitalize on the valentines day crowd, but didn't have the wait a staff to take care of anyone. The owners and managers should be ashamed. This is the last time we'll be eating here. My wife's family have been patrons for over 20 years. Hopefully management will take notice before they completely run this place into the ground.

Johnny Cascone's is one of my favorite Italian American restaurants in the KC area. This family owned restaurant has a nice family friendly atmosphere serving hearty and tasty food. My absolute favorite is the Italian Flag, a good sampling of chicken parm, baked lasagna, and fettuccini alfredo served with salad or soup. I love the hearty sauces! The menu and directions can be found at cascones.com We had dinner here a while back on a roadtrip and enjoyed the whole meal with attentive service. Oh yeah, we called in a reservation and arrived a little early after drinks. The older host (owner) mispronounced my last name a couple times while the staff was getting our table ready. I quietly laughed my keester off! Mangia!

In a long strip of chain restaurants that is Overland Park, Johnny Cascone's is a welcome change. They do it all old-style here, with huge portions and all of your expected favorites: parmesan, marsala, alfredo. The service is very friendly, and we enjoyed a comfortable, hearty meal here. The atmosphere is sort of old-world, with a piano player and a number of blue-hairs who are most likely regulars. The best dish by far was the Chine Bones - which is a huge bowl of pork neck bones cooked in a very tasty red sauce. Every carnivorous member of my family enjoyed them - they are slow-cooked tender and tasty. The antipasto platter was pretty good, but a little heavy and oily. For my entree, I had the "house specialty" Chicken Limonata Elaina. Usually you can put a lemon cream sauce on just about anything and I'll eat it, but I found this sauce too thick and bland for my taste. The chicken breast was cooked well, and very moist and tender. I would recommend this restaurant if you are in the mood for grandma's home-cooked Italian comfort food, but I think I would stick to the red sauces and meat dishes, and skip the heavy cream sauces. 3.5 stars.

Cascone's on 91st and Metcalf isn't full of trendy people. It isn't a place to see or be seen. But it is full of people who like good, traditional Italian food. The entry area is decorated with Cascone family photos, as though the family is welcoming customers into their home. The restaurant is dimly lit and, on occasion, features local live jazz acts. We went to the restaurant for dinner on Friday, February 10, and we were immediately seated. While the restaurant was fairly full, it was not packed. In our 30s, we were among the youngest customers there - mostly the place was packed with middle-aged and elderly clients and families (the extended kind - with grandma and grandpa, mom and dad and the kiddos). I am not typically a customer who orders the exact same item each time I go to a restaurant, but if I'm craving Cascone's I want spaghetti and meatballs, add mushrooms. I always get a house salad and I always gorge myself on Italian bread and butter. The house salad usually comes out overdressed, so I order the dressing on the side. My one complaint is, typically, that they're not consistent with their mushrooms - sometimes I get only a couple - but on this day my dish was loaded with the delightful sautéed fungi. As always the tasty meatballs were huge and moist. Mmmm. And I love Cascone's sugo sauce so much that I buy the jars at the grocery store. I finished my meal with a piece of Cascone's lemon cake. I should've known better than to order a piece to myself because it was HUGE - larger than the sample piece on the dessert tray the waitress brought around. The decadent, moist cake, iced with real lemon buttercream and finished with a strawberry glaze was delicious. The service is always good. Will I go back? Absolutely, the next time I'm craving some down-home Italian food you'll find me at Cascone's.

Last night I ate at Cascone's and it was terrific as always. I have never had bad service here. The wait staff is extremely attentive. The appetizer of stuffed Artichoke was sheer deliciousness. The entree of Lasagne and Spaghetti with Meatballs was perfect. I think they could improve on their salad by using something other than iceberg lettuce. Other then that there is nothing negative I can say. On a Tuesday night it was packed, so I would say that I am not the only one who likes the food!

The only reason I'm rating this one star is because there wasn't an option for no star. The true test of quality for any Italian restaurant should be their red sauce and this one is way down at the bottom of the scale. Maybe we just happened to come in on an off night, but I don't think so, and that should never be the case anyway. The taste and texture reminded me of not much more than watered down tomato paste. I'm sure it was undercooked and it wasn't seasoned very well. The meatballs were also bland with a coarse texture. I consumed less than 1/3 of my meal and pushed the remainder aside. To make things even worse the waitress didn't even have the intelligence or fortitude to ask me if everything was to my liking. She just asked me if I wanted the uneaten portion boxed up. I said no, and that was it. My wife said that her Chicken Spiedini was good so it wasn't a complete lost cause, however we will not be patronizing this establishment again. The moral to this story is that we could have gone to Marco Polo's (Jaspers) and had the best for less. The ticket for 2 dinners with no drinks before tip was $35. We could have eaten 2 comparable meals at Marco Polo's for about $25.

It's good hearty Italian, with the over-sized meatball and everything. It's what you want when your craving Italian, it will satisfy any appetite or taste. However, I suggest eating after early-bird special because from 5 to 6:30 the place is PACKED with older clientele, so much so it gave me the vibes of eating in a nursing home last time I was dining - which is not a pleasant or appetizing atmosphere to be brutally honest. Mostly, the restaurant is always booming, full house in a dining room with large round tables and dark lighting to set the mood (dark lighting is supposedly an appetite-increaser, I heard this somewhere.) The staff is well-trained to wait on the Italian-loving crowds, polite and quick-moving, attentive to everyone's specific orders, keeping the wine coming, etc. I cannot stress how good their homemade mega-sized meatballs are - I don't even like meatballs because of the scarring experiences I've had with them at lower-rent Italian eateries, but here it tastes amazing and you'd be CRAZY not to at try it. The lasagna is well-made and delicious - anything you order will be pleasing. But I cannot stress this enough: come after 7pm, the crowd will be more diverse and less likely to remind you of eating in a retirement facility.

Another neighborhood favorite. Very popular with the older generation earlier in the evening. Great service and very good food. Daily specials including a $9.99 special for early diners. They are Kansas City Original members. Brisk takeout business in the bar area. They also have an excellent private dining and party room.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
